The Role

The Town Council of Abingdon-on-Thames is committed to standing up against domestic abuse. We aspire to become a town which raises awareness of domestic abuse and where all types of such abuse are understood, challenged and where help and support are available to those in need. Through improved education we hope to reduce the risk of abuse starting, continuing, or escalating. We have committed to work with The Abingdon Bridge and 'Reducing the Risk' (RtR) to help deliver services to the residents of Abingdon, with a particular emphasis on young people.

We are looking for an experienced, thoughtful, and proactive Domestic Abuse Programme Coordinator to lead and develop our domestic abuse services. This role is ideal for someone who understands the issues, has a knowledge of the town and its challenges, and can balance strategic planning with hands-on operational leadership.

This person will bring empathy, professionalism, and a survivor-centred approach — someone who can balance compassion with clear boundaries and thoughtful leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Within the first year to:

  1. Set up the Abingdon Against Domestic Abuse (ADA) steering group, which will meet quarterly and then to act as secretary.

  2. Help develop programmes and strategies in line with the priorities set by the steering group. These will include specific strategies for young people.

  3. Build strong relationships with statutory agencies, charities, and local community groups, and to map existing services, identify gaps and how to strengthen networking relationships.

  4. Seek funding opportunities and develop funding applications together with the ADA board including TAB and RtR as required, and explore the possibility of chartable status.

  5. Develop a victim/survivors advisory panel which will include young people and representatives from minority communities. This to meet every six months.
