What is counselling?

Counselling falls under the umbrella term ‘talking therapies’ and allows people to discuss their problems and any difficult feelings they encounter in a safe, confidential environment. The term can mean different things to different people. In general it is a process people seek when they want to change something in their lives or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.

What types of problem?

Anything that is holding you back. It could be anxiety, depression, trouble at work, school, in the family, in relationships. It could be feelings caused by losing someone close, or having a baby, or breaking up. It could be abuse, or other causes of low self-esteem. Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint exactly what it is that is making you feel unhappy. Your counsellor will help you to do that.

How does it help?

Counselling gives you a safe space to talk in confidence on a one-to-one basis with your personal counsellor. While counsellors may not give you concrete advice or a checklist of things to do to feel better, what they will do is help you uncover your own insight and understanding of your problems providing you with the tools which will help you to resolve them on your own. You won't be judged or told what to do. You'll decide what you want to do to make your life better.

Counselling can help you understand yourself better and the way you think, which will ultimately help you develop a clearer understanding of your problems.
